George Frideric Handel
SILLA
Handel’s opera Silla is probably the most enigmatic and unknown of all his operas. The baroque specialist Fabio Biondi discovered and recorded it lately with “his” Europa Galante, an internationally renowned and award-winning ensemble for baroque music.
Performed only once more than 200 years ago, before being buried in the gaps of history, he and Japanese stage director Tadashi Miroku present the first fully staged production since then.
Premiered at the Kanagawa Prefectural Music Hall Tadashi Miroku’s production is inspired by traditional Kabuki theatre, known for its highly stylised
performances and often glamorous costumes and make-up.
“The use of the theatrical devices of Kabuki, which were spectacular at the time, such as scene changes with lifts and turns and the colouring system, have a lot in common with opera, which originated around the same time in Florence, Italy,” says Miroku.
Of course Fabio Biondi brought with him next to Europa Galante a magnificent cast of singers repre- senting the world of early music, such as Vivica Genaux and Roberta Invernizzi.
